Panay Hotel Philippines Travel Network The Panay Island comprises the province of Antique, Capiz, Iloilo and Aklan. There are eleven(11) cities, 122 municipalities and 4048 barangays in the region. The City of Iloilo is the regional administrative center and the regional center of trade, commerce, industry, education, culture and government. Bacolod City in Negros Occidental is another popular city in the region. Iloilo province and its city ranks as one of the country's foremost centers of culture, industry and trade. A 45-minute flight from Manila, Iloilo has stretches of breathtaking, unpolluted seaside communities and beach resorts. Scuba diving, swimming and snorkeling can be done in perfection in the islands of Guimaras and Sicogon as its underwater seascape are one of the most undisturbed in the country. Other sports to be tried are windsurfing, yachting or just plain beachcombing. Iloilo is also a place to see spectacular structure as evident in the period churches and century-old houses. The Miag-ao Fortress Church is a grand example of a medieval bastion church with ornate floral designs on the facade. Antique is a long stretch of land along the entire west coast of Panay Island. It consist of a narrow coastal plain, several valleys, and the steep slopes of rugged mountains to the east that separate the province from the rest of Panay. 14 towns line the coast, three are inland and one is an island. The most extensive lowlands is the delta and floodplain of the Sibalom River behind San Jose. There are numerous rivers in the far north and the far south. The major peaks are: Mt. Madia-as at 2117 meters, Mt. Mangtud 1900 meters and Mt. Baloy 2080 meters. Capiz was a part of Aklan when this was organised as a sakop (political unit) of Panay by Bornean datus in 1213. The name Capiz was believed to be derived from the Visayan word "kapid" and means "twins". When the Spaniards arrived in 1575 twin children were born to the ruler of Aklan, Datu Bankaya. Somehow, the natives inadvertently miscommucated this to the strangers as the name of the place, so the Spaniards adopted the name Capis for what was then Aklan. When Capiz was made into a province on March 10, 1917, it included what is now Aklan. Due to the persistent demand of the Aklanons, Aklan was separated from Capiz in 1956.
